New Patent Awarded for DENT Instruments' PhaseChek™ Electrical Metering Circuitry

(DENT Instruments, Bend, OR) — DENT Instruments, a global leader in the design and manufacture of power and energy measurement instruments, announced today that it had been granted Patent No. 7,612,552 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
There is a growing interest in electrical energy metering in support of energy efficiency and conservation as well as utility bill reduction. Electrical power measurement often requires simultaneous measurement of both voltage and current on one, two, or three electrical phases. The PhaseChek circuitry quickly and easily indicates to a user when the current sensors of the meter have been improperly wired or connected.
Christopher Dent, President of DENT Instruments explained the importance of this development by saying, “PhaseChek circuitry ensures correct current sensor placement during installation, greatly reducing set-up time, eliminating installation errors, and avoiding costly extra trips to correct a faulty meter installation. A mis-wired electrical meter can be insidious in the sense that it will still measure and record power and energy information—it will just be wrong. Sometimes it takes days or longer for someone reviewing the data from the meter to determine that the data is incorrect and send another crew to check and correct the installation, resulting in higher labor costs and lost data.“
